Many people are beyond shocked about Kate Spade’s suicide. People who don’t know her, friends, family, fans, CNN employees and others are all saddened terribly by the news. Some of the things which are being said surrounding Kate Spade’s suicide are the following:

Kate Spade New York issued a statement confirming the “incredibly sad news” of their eponymous founder’s death.

“Although Kate has not been affiliated with the brand for more than a decade, she and her husband and creative partner, Andy, were the founders of our beloved brand,” the statement said. “Kate will be dearly missed. Our thoughts are with Andy and the entire Spade family at this time.”

“We honor all the beauty she brought into this world,” the company said in a tweet.

“She always had such a great ray of light about her. She was so jovial,” Zee said.

There are so many ways in which Kate Spade will be missed and she will always be remembered by the many who loved and admired her. In addition to Kate Spade, more unfortunate news, is that suicide rates are rising all across the United States. Just in the last decade, suicide rates for all ages have risen, especially with white women, at a rate of nearly 60%. Some of these people have a drug or alcohol addiction, but others do not. There are many reasons why people commit suicide.

What is Going on With American Suicide Rates?

According to the CDC or US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in the past 17 years, the suicide rate for all ages overall has increased by 30%. Nationwide, the rise in suicide rates is approximately 25%. What does this statistic mean? It means that 16 in every 100,000 United States citizens will commit suicide. That may not sound like a lot to many but when considering how many United States citizens there are, the numbers add up. Just in 2016 throughout America, around 45,000 committed suicide.

While these numbers are extremely unfortunate, the numbers prove one thing. There are many people who are depressed who are able to hide it. When many people commit suicide, everyone in their life are surprised or shocked to hear the news. They are beyond words at to how it could have happened without them knowing what was going on. With American suicide rates rising, it is important to get help if you need it. Whether you have an addiction that leads you to suicidal thinking or you are feeling depressed for any reason, ask someone for help.

How Does Addiction Play a Role in Suicide?

Many people don’t realize how many people that commit suicide have an addiction. According to SAMHSA or or the Substance Use Disorder and Mental Health Services Administration, suicide is the leading cause of death in those who have an addiction. Why is this?

There are many reasons why an addiction can lead someone to suicide. One of the reasons is the sleep issues associated with addiction. Some drugs can cause the user to stay awake for days on end. This messes up the chemicals and signals in the brain and can lead to depression, cause hallucinations and make already present mental health issues even worse. Additionally, many drugs and alcohol are depressants. When someone is already suffering from mental health issues, abusing alcohol or drugs, increases the depressive feelings and thoughts, which increases the risk of suicide as well. This is just the start of how addiction plays a role in suicide.

If you suffer from an addiction, be sure to get treatment. With addiction treatment, you can get help treating the addiction and any mental health issues at the same time. This is called co-occuring disorder treatment.

Kate Spade’s suicide has shaken America and brought up a lot of talk about mental illness, depression, addiction and suicide. It is such a tragic event that has saddened so many people. It is only with hope that more people will learn about the resources for getting help if they are feeling depressed, that there is hope for a better future with reduced suicide rates. Don’t suffer in silence. Be sure if you are suffering from depression, addiction or any other mental health issues, you get the help that is needed right away.
